Let's Do It Ourselves! - The Fun of Doing It Yourself (DIY)

Interested in being creative? Interested in using your mind to build a certain product on your own? Well this one’s for you! We’re here to help you venture into the world of “Do It Yourself” and explain the fun of it.

What are DIY projects?

DIY projects can be in the form of purchasing parts of a product and assembling them all together to form a completed product, for example our Crystal Puzzles or Science Kits. It could also be creating items from scratch such as making Slime or DIY Tie-dyed T-shirts. The DIY industry is still continuing to expand rapidly, with an approximate growing value of $13.9 billion by 2021 (Inc.com, 2021).

Below are 3 reasons why DIY products are more common around the world today:

  1. It is a form of distraction.

Do It Yourself (DIY) art and crafts are a good way to distract yourself from everything that is surrounding you, and focus on discovering new things that you have never experienced before. DIY activities allow the happiest and healthiest people to keep their creativity alive and active. After a tiring day of work or school, ending it off with an easy DIY activity puts your mind at ease as compared to distracting yourself with your mobile devices.

2. It gives you a sense of accomplishment.

Imagine when you were still in school, your math teacher asked you to solve a question in front of the class and he complimented you because you got the correct answer. Remember that feeling? This is the same feeling after you have successfully assembled a DIY product. That sense of accomplishment that makes you want more of a certain activity in order to challenge yourself. Personally I feel very satisfied when I can get things done without anyone helping me. It makes me feel that I am on top of the world.

3. It trains your brain power.

Every single DIY activity trains different parts of the brain. It teaches you new skills and knowledge based on the individual activity that you are doing, which then improves on your problem solving skills and creative thinking. For example, most furniture in IKEA is designed to be easy to build and be dismantled for transportation purposes. In the world today, almost everything that we get is being traded by money, therefore making a DIY product with our own two hands has more value. The main reason behind this is because you are using problem solving skills to create the product, the higher the difficulty level, the greater the satisfaction. Hence, DIY activities increase brain power due to the dopamine that our brain receives after all these problem solving.

So, Why DIY?

DIY-ing allows your imagination to go wild, expanding your train of thoughts. It does not matter what kind of activities you are doing, it could even be making a simple birthday present for your friend, it is always the thought that comes behind it. I hope this has helped you know more about DIY in general. Now, go and do something that interests you!
