How to Motivate your Child to Study?

Does your child struggle with his studies? Does he seem to be unmotivated? Well as a parent, your presence in your child’s academic life of your child is essential to his commitment to his/her studies. For example, you can do his homework together with him and give him the sense of security that you are available to help him answer questions whenever and whatever he is unclear of. One way is to get into the habit of asking him about what he has learnt in school and engage with him in terms of academics. By showing your interest in your child’s school life, you will show him that school can be interesting. This is even more effective on young children who get excited about whatever you are excited about.

Another way to help your child to study is to reward their efforts rather than the outcome. Essentially, as a parent, the message you want to send to your child is that you respect and appreciate their hard work. Praising kids for continuing when things do not go out as planned or for things, they are unsure of if they will succeed or not. This will then teach them to enjoy the pleasure and excitement of pushing themselves.

Another way to motivate your child to study is to allow them to make mistakes. Although there may be some geniuses who get all A’s on every test and exams, you as parents should not burden your child to do the same. While children need encouragement and it is healthy for them to push and try their best, they need to know that mistakes are natural. Sometimes the only way for children to prepare for an exam is to find out what happens if they are not prepared.

Ultimately, you as parents can support kids as they learn to appreciate their own efforts as well as embrace their mistakes and work on from there whether it is work or at school. Continuous studying may not guarantee them straight A’s on exams, but it will be able to improve their performance so they try to do their best.
