Why is Sleep Important?

Sleep without a doubt is a vital function that allows both your body and mind to recharge, leaving you alert and refreshed when you wake up. It plays an essential role in maintaining the wellness of the human body both mentally and physically. For example, when you start to get groggy and sleepy at night, it's your body telling you that it has reached its limits and that you should head to bed to not over-exert yourself.

But is good sleep important in having good health? Well, yes, it is. It is said that the mood in which you wake up is dependent on the type of sleep you have been in. While sleeping, the body can take a rest and gets ample time to rejuvenate from all the strenuous activities done in the day. Have you ever suffered from a migraine and then you go to sleep and when you wake up to find out the pain has subsided? This is how a solid sleep session can influence your mind.

So how long must children sleep? For most children, they require at least nine to eleven hours of sleep each night for proper cognitive and behavioural functions. Some studies have shown that with an insufficient amount of sleep will lead people to be vulnerable to attention lapses, reduced cognition, delayed reactions, and mood shifts. Although human’s brains and bodies may suffer due to lack of sleep, they may or may not be aware of their deficiencies as less sleep feels like the norm to them.

So how can we as parents help our kids to have a good sleep schedule during the school holidays? We can help them by fixing a regular bedtime or by planning the day. By fixing a regular bedtime, the children will be able to follow a good sleep schedule regardless of the holidays or not. Children only refuse to go to bed early when they are tired so we as parents should plan the day with some activities your children will look forward to doing. For example, going for a swim or flying a kite, we guarantee you that they will sleep early for sure that night.

A person’s ability to make decisions, remember things, and many others are all dependent on if you are getting an ample amount of sleep daily. Thus, getting enough sleep is one necessity in life and this is to bring to light how important sleep is in our lives.
